AEP
Instructor: Mrs. Calkins
The Advanced Elementary Program (A.E.P.) serves state-identififed gifted students in a resource room pullout model.  Third graders come to A.E.P. every Thursday from 12:10-2:15.  Fourth graders attend on Thursday mornings from 8:25-11:45.  Fifth graders are served in two groups:  Ms. Pope's class Tuesdays from 10:30-2:25 and Ms. Swift's and Ms. Pyle's classes Mondays from 10:30-2:25.  I also go into the regular second grade classes once a week, 30 minutes,  for Brain Boosters.  It is a program designed to help students think critically and raise standardized test scores in order to qualify more students for A.E.P.
Curriculum consists of teacher-created units of study and include all disciplines.  In addition to these units, critical and creative thinking activities are done each week.  There is also a heavy emphasis on technology in A.E.P.
I am Mrs. Jill Calkins and am the teacher of A.E.P.  I am married to Mike and have three children, Chris, Paul and Lauren.  I graduated from Centenary College in Shreveport, LA, and have special certification to teach gifted students.  My hobbies are playing tennis, scrapbooking, reading and watching HGTV (while trying to think of new home improvement projects to do).  I enjoy life and especially enjoy teaching curious gifted students.

AEP Curriculum
3rd Graders in AEP this nine weeks complete a science unit about inventions called "Inventions"--how clever!!  Students will work through a series of learning centers based on the inventive process.  This unit will culminate with a field trip to Fort Discovery, a science museum, on Dec. 17.

AEP fourth graders work on a science and architectural unit called "Electricity City".  They perform experiments to learn more about electricity and then build a to-scale model of a house and wire it with a parallel circuit.

In fifth grade AEP students this nine weeks studey the law through a unit called "With Liberty and Justice for All".  They become acquainted with basic law terms and trial procedures.  Working with law study groups, activities are completed on problem solving, research and trial by jury.
